John Leslie "Doc" Hathaway, 85 of Sidney Center N.Y. passed away peacefully with family at his side on September 10th, 2015 in Sarasota FL. John was born in Pine Mill, PA to Emmett and Grace Hathaway on August 6 1930. He was one of 5 children. He graduated from Hancock Central School in 1950 where he was a standout baseball player. One of his fondest memories was being selected to play in an All Star game played at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. After graduation he went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army where he served as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne until he was honorably discharge in 1953 as a Corporal. In 1953 he was employed by the Scintilla Magneto/Bendix Corporation in Sidney N.Y. until 1981. He enjoyed all aspects of the great outdoors from fishing, hunting, hiking and camping - especially when his friends and family were involved. He was a devout Christian man and showed this in every aspect of his life. He loved to attend any athletic event involving the Sidney Warriors. He proudly served for many years on the Sidney Central School Board. He taught hunter safety courses to hundreds of people, eventually becoming a master instructor in bow hunter safety. He coached many youngsters in baseball through Little League and Pee Wee baseball programs which he was instrumental in getting teams from Sidney Center. John was active in his community and throughout his life he encouraged others to do their best and was always looking for an opportunity to lighten another's burden and provide them a reason to smile. He is survived by his wife of 60 years Dorothy "Morenus" of Sidney Center N.Y. daughter Jeanne A. Dahl of Sarasota FL, son Jeff Hathaway and wife Barbara of Liverpool N.Y., son James of Sidney Center N.Y. his sister Betty Wood of PA, 8 grandchildren (1 great grandchild on its way), many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was pre-deceased by his brothers Amos and Emmett, his sister Marion Seig and his eldest son John D. Friends are invited to C.H. Landers Funeral Home for calling hours from 12:00pm to 2:00pm on Saturday, September 26th, 2015 with a Memorial Service to follow at 2:00pm. All are invited to a reception lunch immediately after at Trackside Dining owned by his niece Nancy. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to a John Hathaway Scholarship Fund for a Sidney Athlete being formed Send check to SFCU Dollars for Scholars, 42 Union Street, Sidney, NY 13838. In the memo put: John Hathaway Scholarship. C.H. Landers Funeral Home at 21 Main St., Sidney, NY will be handling the Memorial Service arrangements.
