LaRue Haynie Elliott, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully Sunday, June 28, 2009 at Cove Point Retirement Community in Provo, Utah. LaRue was born on August 29, 1920, to Leonard M. and Hazel G. (Mortensen) Haynie in Manassa, Colorado. She is survived by Theodore F. Elliott, her husband for 63 years; one daughter, Nancy (Alden) Tueller of Provo, UT and one son, Bob (Dorice Williams) Elliott of Lawrence, KS.
LaRue moved with her parents to Alamosa, CO when she was twelve years of age. She graduated from Alamosa High School, attended the University of Utah for two years, and studied at the Dr. W. H. Groves Latter-day Saint Hospital in Salt Lake City for three years where she received her R.N. degree. She joined the United States Army Nurse Corps during World War II in December 1943, serving in Oregon, California and Virginia. She was then assigned to the 81st Field Hospital serving in England, France and Germany. The hospital was made up of 18 nurses, 22 officers and 186 enlisted men. Their patients were displaced persons released from German concentration camps and prisoner of war camps, and were of many nationalities. LaRue received an honorable discharge from the service in December 1945. She met her husband, Dr. Theodore F. Elliott while in the service. He was an officer in the 81st Field Hospital.
LaRue and Ted were married in a double wedding ceremony with two friends on June 7, 1946 in her home in Alamosa, CO. They were later sealed to each other and to their children, Nancy and Robert, as an eternal family on August 2, 1977 in the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. LaRue and Ted lived in Sidney, NY where Ted grew up. Ted practiced Optometry in Sidney for sixty years. LaRue served in the community for many years working in all the schools as an aide, and as a school nurse teacher. She was a woman of compassion and service, full of kindness and love. In 1972, LaRue went back to college and received her Bachelor of Science degree from New York State University at Oneonta, NY.
LaRue provided selfless service to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints having worked in the Primary, the Young Women's Organization and the Relief Society. This service was second only to her love and devotion to her husband and her children.
LaRue is also survived by six grandchildren: Michael (Korina Lombardo) Tueller of Phoenix, AZ, Scot (Martha Riano) Tueller of Provo, UT, Lance (Valerie Nisson) Tueller of Idaho Springs, CO, Brooke Elliott (Kary) Faria da Cunha of Lawrence, KS, Jane Elliott of New York City, and Colin Elliott of San Francisco, CA; five great-grandchildren: Peter, Jessica, Margaret, Laura and Ryder Tueller. She is survived by a sister, Louise Johnson of Provo, UT, and a brother, Delph Haynie of Durango, CO. She was preceded in death by a brother, Elwood Haynie of Colorado Springs, CO.
A church service was held on Thursday, July 2, 2009 in Provo, UT. LaRue will be buried with military honors at 1:00pm on Tuesday, July 21, 2009 in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney, NY.
