Obituary of John Latta

John Latta Sidney Center, NY John Latta, 87, of Sidney Center, passed away on Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at Fox Hospital in Oneonta, NY. He was the son of Anastasia Sastich Latta and Vasile Latta, of Johnson City NY, and was born in Pittsburgh, PA on August 1, 1924. John was married to Ernestine Von Bargen Latta on October 4, 1952. Ernestine passed away on March 19, 1986. John married Eileen L. Atkinson on November 6, 1988. John is survived by his wife Eileen, daughter Nancy Latta Donnelly and son in law James Donnelly of West Palm Beach, Florida, son Peter Latta and daughter in law Doris Latta of Claymont, Delaware, son John B. Latta and daughter in law Melissa King of Sidney, New York, and daughter Christine Latta Sproull and son in law Steven Sproull of Carmel, Indiana. John's 10 surviving grandchildren are Jacquline McManus (and husband Chris), Jennifer Bush (and husband Dennis), Kristian Latta, Kelsey Latta, Ryan Latta, Alexander Latta, Alexander King, Nathan Sproull and James Sproull. His great grand children are Erica Bush, Jonathan Bush, Samantha Bush, Shaun McManus and Kyle McManus. John served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theatre and in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a Staff Sergeant in Patton's 3rd Army Company C 345 in the 87th Infantry Division. He received his Combat Infantrymen's Badge and a Bronze Star. He was a life time member of the American Legion and a member of the VFW Post in Sidney, NY. He was a member of the St. Michael's Orthodox Church in Binghamton, NY where he enjoyed making piorhi during the Lenten season. He was also a member of the Masonic Temple in Unadilla, NY. John served the community as a Scoutmaster of Troop 63 in Sidney Center, NY in the 1960s. He was a member of the Sidney Center Cemetery Committee and served on the Sidney School Board. For many years he maintained low income housing for people less fortunate than he. The visitation will be Sunday, October 30th from 7:00 - 9:00 PM at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main Street, Sidney, NY. A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 31st at 10:00 AM at St. Michael's Greek Catholic Church, 292 Clinton Street in Binghamton, NY. Memorial contributions in John's name may be made to St. Michael's Greek Catholic Church, 292 Clinton Street, Binghamton, NY. Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.landersfh.com.
