Obituary of Gary John Lackos

Gary John Lackos (78) of Mount Upton, N.Y. passed away on the morning of February 10th, 2023. He is survived by his loving children Gary (Chris) Lackos, Paul (Sandy) Lackos, Lee Mangiamele, Crystal Lackos, and Heather (Dan) Lackos and his loving grandchildren Thomas, Paulie, Katie, Owen, Kaden, Emma, Wyatt, and soon to be born Layne. He is predeceased by his loving wife Margaret, his brother Michael and his parents John and Nancy Lackos. Gary was born July 17th, 1944 on Long Island. He spent his childhood and early adult years there. In 1972, seeking a peaceful life in the country, he moved to his home in Mount Upton where he raised his family and remained for the rest of his years. Much like his father, he was a skilled woodworker and handyman and had a successful business as a carpenter for many years. Later in his career he transitioned to working in building and community development and code enforcement for the City of Norwich, from which he eventually retired. Gary enjoyed everything outdoors; he was an avid fisherman, hunter, and spent the summers camping in the Adirondacks. His favorite camping spot was Indian Lake, where he brought his animal companions Kip and Molly. He found peace and serenity in the outdoors, and enjoyed the sights and sounds found in nature. His friends and family were always dear to him, and he found happiness in gathering with everyone at BBQs, camping and fishing trips, and especially hunting season with his sons, friends and family from Long Island. He loved the Christmas season: decorating the tree, singing Christmas carols, playing Santa and bringing smiles to his children and later his grandchildren's faces. He also made one heck of an eggnog. He was an active member of the local community and the Episcopal churches in Gilbertsville and Sidney. He enjoyed coffee hours where he could chat with friends and participated in many of the church events. He offered his craftsman's skills to help with repairs at the Christ Church in Gilbertsville. He took pride in being self-reliant; he restored his house and barn and started a small family farm, enjoyed gardening and hunting to provide for his family, and split wood to warm his home. He was a proud and independent man and remained so until his final days. He will be dearly missed by friends and family. Friends and family may call from 4-7 on Thursday, February 16th at C.H. Lander's Funeral Chapel at 21 Main St. Sidney, N.Y. Funeral services will be held Friday, February 17th, 2023 at 11am at St. Paul's Episcopal Church River St. Sidney.
