Obituary of Edith C. Loller

Edith C. Loller Sidney, NY Edith Church Loller, 93, a resident of Aaron Manor in Fairport, NY and formerly of Sidney, passed away on September 26, 2010 after a lengthy illness. She was predeceased in death by her loving and devoted husband of 35 years, Robert Thomas Loller; her sons-in-law James S. Michalak and Robert F. Swenson, her sisters and brothers-in-law, Gladys and Paul Swanson of Orlando, FL; Helen and Howard Slocum of Oneonta, Edna and Loren Brandow of Binghamton and Janice and Robert Riddell of Colliersville; and nephews, Wayne Swanson and Robert Bruce Riddell. Edith is survived by her daughter, Carol Michalak Swenson of Fairport, NY; son, Thomas (Sheryl) Loller of Greece, NY; her grandchildren Robert (Melissa) Michalak of Maryville, TN, Christopher (Jennifer) Michalak of Elkton, MD, Tara (Geoff) Hilchey of Scottsville, NY, and Stacey (David) Jones of Rochester. Edith is also survived by eight great grandchildren: Tommy, Amanda, Liah, Cameron, Evan, Emma, Jack and Derek. Also surviving is a brother, Edward (Irene) Church of Oneonta; as well as several nieces. Edith was born in 1917, the fourth daughter of six children born to Edith and Lynn Church of Oneonta. A 1935 graduate of Oneonta High School, Edith was a participant in the school's orchestra, playing the violin for several years. Upon graduation, she became employed by Bresee's Department Store as manager of "The Health Bar" until her marriage to Robert in 1940. The couple lived on Bridge Street in Sidney until their own home on Prospect Drive was completed. The neighbors on Prospect Dr. were very helpful after her husband, Rob, passed away in 1976. Edith and her family were grateful for their support. In 1952, Edith became an employee of the Sidney Central School District as manager of the Pearl Street School Cafeteria. In 1960, she accepted the position of manager of the new Senior High School Cafeteria. She was well known and liked by the multitudes of students and staff that frequented the cafeteria during her tenure. Edith was awarded the New York State United Teachers Commendation for Outstanding Performance in the Cause of Education. She enjoyed and cherished the friendships of many of her colleagues within the District after her retirement in 1983. Edith spent her life as an active member in the community. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Sidney for more than seventy years, holding various positions within the Church. She volunteered for The Board of Elections, Red Cross Blood Drives and was an active volunteer at The Hospital. Edith was always on hand to make peanut brittle for her church fund raiser, preparing a church dinner, or to help organize the church rummage sale. At times when requested, she would bake her famous cinnamon buns, orange rolls or her famous potato salad for community events. Edith was a loving, devoted wife and mother and will be sorely missed by her family and friends. There will be no prior calling hours. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Monday, October 4, 2010 at 1:00pm at the United Methodist Church, 12 Liberty St. Sidney, NY 13838. The family will greet friends and relatives immediately following the service. Burial will be at the Oneonta Plains Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
