Victor Louis Miller, 81 of Sidney, passed away on Saturday, April 24, 2010 at Oneonta Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in Oneonta, NY.
He was born August 8, 1928 in Oneonta, NY, the son of Bernice Fitch and Frank Miller. Victor was raised by his grandmother, Belle Miller, on her farm in Meridale. He attended a one room school near her home, and later, he attended Delaware Academy in Delhi. At age 14, Victor moved to Sidney, where he attended and graduated from Sidney Central School with the Class of 1946.
In 1946, Vic enlisted in the U.S. Army. He went to work in Scintilla (later Amphenol) in June 1948. He worked 18 years as an Expeditor. In 1966, he was hired in Data Processing and self-trained and schooled to become a Computer Programmer. He retired in 1986, as the Supervisor of Programmers.
Vic was married to Florence Fisk on November 24, 1948 in Port Dickinson, NY. He and Flossie raised three daughters: Brenda, Vicki and Cheryl.
Vic is survived by his wife of 61 years, Flossie; daughters and sons-in-law Vicki and David Kulze of Sidney, Cheryl and David Sofra of Raleigh, NC, and John DeMatteo of Sidney. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Matthew (Molly) DeMatteo of Groton, NY, Johanna DeMatteo of Sidney, Jenny Rudock of Kirkwood, NY, Maureen (Russ) McCormick of Rochester, NY, Michael (Carol) Dombrowski of Mt. Holly, NC, Patrick (Melissa) Dombrowski of Chapel Hill, NC and Victoria Sofra of Raleigh, NC; and great-grandchildren: Leah, Emma and Ben DeMatteo, Joshua and Emily Rudock, Dylan McCormick, Austin Cook and Collin Dombrowski. Vic is also survived by his sister and husband, Marion and Garrett Platt of Williston, FL; his sisters-in-law, Leta Williams of Bainbridge and Joan (Bill) Northrop of Guilford, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his mother, Bernice Rooke in 1994, his stepfather, Benjamin Rooke in 1982, his daughter Brenda DeMatteo in 2003 and his grandson Brent DeMatteo in 1988.
Vic was a great jokester, and he loved puns. He had a keen mind for dates and figures. In his younger days, he enjoyed playing softball, and coached a boys' Grasshopper League team. For many years, he enjoyed family camping trips in the pop-up camper, mostly at Golden Beach on Raquette Lake. He liked to read and do the daily crossword puzzles in the newspaper. He was Class Representative for the Class of 1946 for the Sidney Alumni Association. In his retirement, he enjoyed his time with his friends at the Sidney Memorial Library, and taking long walks. He was a member of the Amphenol Retirees Group. He and Flossie enjoyed traveling to Myrtle Beach, Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, 1000 Islands, and to Hawaii to celebrate their 40th Anniversary. Most importantly, they thoroughly enjoyed their family and friends.
Friends are invited to call on Tuesday, April 27, 2010 from 6:00-8:00pm at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St. Sidney, NY 13838. Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm on Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Main Street, Unadilla, with Rev. Scott Garno, pastor officiating. Burial will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, PO Box 537 Unadilla, NY 13838.
