James R. Warren, 81, passed away early Sunday morning, February 11, 2018 at The Grand Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Rome, NY. Jim was born on July 27, 1936 in Englewood, NJ, son of the late Melbourne and Ruth (Savige) Warren.
He graduated from Hawley High School in Pennsylvania in 1954. Shortly after graduation, Jim enlisted with the US Marine Corps and served his country honorably until his discharge in 1957.
On April 4, 1958, he was married to Gail Covey.
Jim resumed his education at the University of Scranton, graduating in 1962 with his B.S. in Education and received his Masters in Education from Oneonta State. In 1962, Jim began his teaching career at Sidney High School. He taught Social Studies at Sidney, where he also coached tennis, until 1971, at which time he began teaching for Oneonta City School District, where he remained until his retirement in 1996.
During his teaching career, Jim was also a dedicated public servant. Upon coming to Sidney in 1962, he became the Head Lifeguard at the Sidney Municipal Pool, later transitioning to Director of the Pool. He served the Village of Sidney as a Trustee for 8 years before being elected as Mayor in 1999. He served 12 years until deciding not to run for reelection in 2011.
Jim also enjoyed hunting and fishing, and spending time with his family.
He is survived by: his wife of 59 years, Gail Warren; four children: Scott and Beth Warren, Robert Warren, Jeff and Elizabeth Warren and Patti and Scott Webster; grandchildren: Colin and Erin Webster and Jamie and Jennifer Warren.
