Lee Brookins, 84, died on May 8th at the NYS Veteran's Home in Oxford. He was born on May 5, 1932, in Bainbridge, NY and grew up in Walton, NY. In 1946, he was 8th grade class valedictorian at Miller Avenue School. He was always an active person. When he was 15, two other boys and he rode bikes from Walton to Cooperstown and back, 110 miles. He graduated from Walton High School in 1950. Then he went to Broome tech for 1 year. He joined the Marines during the Korean Conflict. He then went to work at Amphenol. He started an apprenticeship for tool maker in 1960. Later, he was the first person in the NC Programming Department.
During his life he enjoyed music: played accordion, trumpet, harmonica, singing in the church choir at weddings, and in some tri-town plays. He also sang in the Delaware county men's choir. After marriage in 1962, he became a member of St Luke's Lutheran church. At the church he served on council, property community, where he mowed the lawn and repaired things. He loved water skiing, especially in competition. He also enjoyed diving, snow skiing, basket ball, tennis, and volleyball. He served on the Board of united way. He taught the young boaters safety course. He was involved with boy scouts while his sons where in. He was also scout master.
After his stroke in 1997, he still kept active by riding a special bike. He was still able to enjoy life by traveling down south with his wife and going on cruises.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Elenore Brookins; his two sons, Russell and Neil; his one and only loving granddaughter, Samantha; his sister, Phyllis and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to call from 10:00am-12:00noon on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 139 W. Main St. Sidney. A memorial service will follow at 12:00noon with Rev. Ernie Varga, pastor officiating. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to St Luke's Lutheran Church. Condolences and memories may be shared online at www.landersfh.com.
