Joseph F Sastra, 93, spread his wings at home in Hot Springs, AR, on Tuesday, Sept 15 in the loving arms of his youngest daughter, Kimberly.
He was born in Norwich, NY, the son of the late Frank Sastri and Giovannia Fazio Sastri. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Sastra, Hot Springs, AR; his children, Gary Ann Manswarren of Norwich, NY, Shayne Buckles Coleman and Hershel of Wichita Falls, TX, Cynthia Strain and Rusty Luce of Guilford, NY, Michael and Barbara Sastra of Endicott, NY, Kimberly Sastra Lotierzo of Stratford, NJ; and a sister, Rose (Sastri) Phelps of Norwich, NY. He also leaves, Steven Stewart of Atlanta, GA, Tim Stewart of Ocala, FL, John and Vanessa Stewart of Hot Springs, and Pat Stewart of Hot Springs; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Alta Cooper Sastra, his wife, Veronica Hughes Sastra; his sisters, Mary Sastri Delmonte, Catherine Sastri DiNoto, Josephine Sastri DiNoto; and his brothers, Salvatore Sastri, James Sastri, Angelo Sastri, and Anthony Sastri.
Joseph was a longtime resident of Sidney, NY and Hot Springs, AR. He worked at Amphenol (Scintilla) in Sidney as a welder and also in the maintenance department. He served in WW2 as a Rifle Marksman and machine gun crewman from 1941 – 1945, and was wounded in action at Iwo Jima, Feb. 19, 1945. He received a Purple Heart and an honorable discharge. Joe was also a Commander of the VFW in Sidney for several terms.
The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Hospice of Hot Springs, as well as his special caregivers, Love, Kelley, Ben and Dixie. There will be a celebration of his life at a later date in Sidney, NY.
