Douglas Paul Blakelock, 86, formerly of Unadilla, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at Mebane Ridge Assisted Living in Mebane, NC. He was born in Schenectady, NY on November 29, 1928 to Harriet Ann Sowers and Douglas Albert Blakelock.
Doug grew up in Schenectady, NY and graduated from Draper High School. He went on to graduate from Paul Smiths College with an Associate Degree and attended the University of Maine before joining the Army at the end of the Korean War. He was stationed at Fort Campbell Kentucky.
Doug was a Forester all his life. He loved the outdoors and was an avid fly fisherman. He spent a lot of time every year in the Adirondacks, fishing on the Ausable River and camping with his family. He ran the Otsego County Forestry Department for many years until his retirement. After retirement, he enjoyed driving school bus for Unatego Schools and volunteered at the annual Wrestling Tournament.
Doug had a strong faith in Jesus and was led to become an ordained Deacon of the Episcopal Church, where he served for several years. He belonged to the Albany Diocese and participated in Marriage Encounter and was a Youth Minister with Happening. He was a dedicated member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Unadilla for over 50 years, where he was also a member of the choir. He also served as Chaplin for American Legion 806 in Bainbridge, and was a member of the Society of American Foresters.
Doug is survived by: his wife of 61 years, Sally Ann (Lyons) Blakelock; four children: Douglas and Wendy Blakelock, Loie and Tim Leopardi, Paul and Jacquie Blakelock and Lisbeth and Tracey Monell; grandchildren: Timothy and Kristin Blakelock, Adam Blakelock, Erin and Jonathan Stephenson, Kate Cobb, Michael Cobb, Lauren Blakelock, Mark and Jennifer Deger and Jacob and Hannah Monell; great-grandchildren: Levi and Zachariah Blakelock, Cora Stephenson, Ashton Deger and Conor Blakelock.
He was predeceased by his son, Mark Robert Blakelock, and his only sister, Claire Harriet Knight.
Family would like to thank Mebane Ridge Assisted Living Staff for their compassion and care, especially his "favorite girls", Jessica and Amber.
Friends are invited to call from 5:00-7:00pm on Monday, August 3, 2015 at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St. Sidney, NY 13838. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, August 4th at St. Matthews Episcopal Church, 240 Main St. Unadilla, NY 13849. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Matthews Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mebane Ridge Assisted Living, Horizons Unit, 1999 South NC Highway 119 Mebane, NC 27302.
