Obituary of Robert E. Backus

Robert E. Backus Sidney, NY Robert E. "Bob" Backus, 62, of Sidney, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at his home following an extended illness. Bob was born in Sidney on December 8, 1951, son of O.E. Backus and Barbara (Benedict) Backus Lash and was raised by his grandparents, Richard and Ruth Benedict. Following high school, Bob enlisted in the United States Army and served his country during the Vietnam War. Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Bob dedicated four more years of service to the United States Coast Guard until his honorable discharge in 1983. Bob was a jack of all trades, working a variety of different jobs over his life. Most recently, he was a greens keeper at the Sidney Golf and Country Club. He was a longtime member of the Corporal R.H. Arrandale VFW Post 7914, his home away from home, as well as the Charles L. Jacobi American Legion Post 183. He is survived by: Brothers: Richard Backus and Pam Johnson, South Dakota Cyle and Tracy Backus, Connecticut Sisters: Serena Backus, Sidney Kristen Backus, Virginia Beloved Aunt and Caregiver, Rosalie Northrup, Sidney Cousin, Paula Hoffman, Pennsylvania As well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends may call from 1:00-3:00pm on Friday, September 26, 2014 at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St. Sidney. Military Honors will follow at the graveside at 3:00pm in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Unadilla. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Disabled American Veterans at www.dav.org.
