I want to express my sadness and condolences to Doug's family. I am one of Doug's fraternity brothers from Alpha Delta Phi at the U of R. Doug was a good friend, a year younger than I. I just learned of his passing from the latest issue of the Rochester Review. At the time, he was on the wrestling team. Can remember attending his meets. I also remember a guy who was good to everyone and full of energy. Also remember trips around town in his Mustang fastback. We were all envious. Again, so sorry to hear of his passing. Ted Winther.

My condolences to Doug's family. He & I were classmates (K-12) at BG. I was pleased to see him this past July at our 50th class reunion, and had a chance to remind him of the time in First Grade(Mrs. Davenport's class) when he ran around the room and kissed all the screaming little girls while the teacher was in the hallway. At the reunion he insisted he had been far too shy to do such a thing back then; but I recall it clearly. He was also part of our informal "January birthday bunch". Marilyn and my mother were in the Recreation Club in Bainbridge. Its impossible to wrap my head around the deaths of both Doug & Marilyn. So sorry for your loss. Jerri Niles

I was very sorry to hear of Doug's passing. Although I had not seen him in years, I have very fond memories of summers playing with Doug and Gwen at Guilford Lake. With smiles I remember no matter what game we kids were playing Doug always pretended to be a gorilla while climbing nearby trees. Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss.

Mr. Quinney was my coach, but what he taught me had little to do with running circles around a track. Mr. Quinney promised us 3 things; we would work hard, we would have fun, and we would win. The teenage me naively thought that these promises were related to races and track meets; the adult me understands that he was preparing us for success in any endeavor that we approached with those expectations. Mr. Quinney not only recognized abilities that we didn't know we had, but he believed in us so confidently that he convinced us to believe in ourselves.
I owe a depth of gratitude my words can't possibly express to Mr. Quinney's family. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing this great man with us. While we will miss the boom of his voice, the bellow of his laughter, and the warmth of his smile, they remain a part of the fabric of who we are. He will always be in my heart and inspire me to strive for the best. May the love we all share for him carry you through this time.

I wish I could express my deepest sympathies to all of you tomorrow, but am unable to get up there. Coach Q had a tremendous impact on me as a high school student, that lasted long after I graduated. Some of my fondest memories of my days at SHS are the times spent with my track teammates at all of those long meets during the Winter and Spring seasons, as well as in his classroom, which was never dull. The impact he had on so many young people is immeasurable.
Even 25+ years later when we reconnected on Facebook, he would post remarks about meets and events that my team participated in, as well as all those in between, with great detail. He was genuinely interested in what all of us were doing as well as our families. When he saw a photo I posted of my son's first track meet last year, he messaged me and asked what events he was doing and offered his expertise. He clearly adored each of you and those adorable grandchildren. I will miss seeing his photos of them.

My first impression of Mr. Quinney, when I first began teaching at Sidney High School in January, 1986, was when he would announce on the intercom, "Runners in the hall!" right after school during the Winter Track season. He had the hurdles set up in the hall on the first floor by the library for his athletes' practice sessions. He was a kind and caring person, with so much zest for life in everything that he did. All that were fortunate to know him in any way, are echoing this, and so many other thoughts and feelings, as we can all read in these condolences. My deepest sympathy, and a wish for peace and comfort, to his family and friends at this sad time.
Sincerely, Ellen Hurtubise

Mrs. Quinney, Tammy and Theresa,
I am so sorry for your loss. We all share a part of your loss. As with many others, Mr. Quinney was an inspirational person to me and played a role in shaping me to become who I am today, both mentally and physically. I will miss his motivational quotes and pictures posted on Facebook reminding me of my youth. Most of all, I will miss seeing his announcements to the track team when he would be in to work with hurdlers, an indication that yet another generation of kids was benefiting from his coaching skills years after he "officially" retired. I'm confident that he and Coach Armour are already busy scouting out and recruiting angels who exhibit hidden talents for track and field.

Many people that grew up in the Tri-town area would be quick to tell you that their will never be another Fran Redmond. Then along comes a Doug Quinney. Another giant of a man that, above all, taught character to so many kids. Well, it's true that their will never be another Fran Redmond; nor will their soon be another Doug Quinney. Different in style, but both cut from the same quality cloth. I am reminded of what the Wizard of Oz said to the Tin Man: "A heart is not judged by how much YOU love, but rather by how much you are Loved by others." This line must have been written with Doug Quinney in mind. To his family I would like to express more than condolences. I wish to express the sincere gratitude felt by so many parents for allowing us to share your father and husband with our kids. And our kids are better adults for it. May God be with you all in this most difficult of times.

We just arrived back from a Navy gathering in Washington DC to receive the news about Doug. The old words about "words cannot express" come flooding into my mind. Doug was a fellow teacher for all of his career, and most o mine in Sidney. He was a good friend, a mentor and teacher of my children, a wonderful coach of my son. When you teach across the hall from someone for all these years and had a tight a web of SS Dept folks for all these years, Quinney, Myself, Longe, Haller and Hornung..you cannot express the loss. I know I will see and talk to many in the next days and months...but this friendship is eternal....it does not end. Our prayers and thoughts now go to his wife and children and their families. He was a giant in our district in so many ways that lead to the definition of "Legend". E.Abbot & Maureen Abbot

Please accept my condolences for your loss. Life is short and Doug's passing reinforces that statement.I am glad I attended our 50th BG highschool class reunion and got caught up on Dougs and my years growing up in Bainbridge. We shared a meal together and talked about track. I will always remember that conversation and cherish the memory. GOD has given us the gift of memory/recall and so during this time of sorrow and loss remember the yesterdays that only you can recall. Bask in the warmth that the memories bring and use it to fill the void.I give thanks and praise to God for putting me in Doug's presence this past July. Coming to Vestal 34 years ago as a novice Track coach, Doug was one of the individuals that all the young coaches looked up to, not just because of his outstanding program at Sidney, but the way he treated all those he came in contact with. Although I did not know Doug real well, his voice was heard many an afternoon in the hallways of Sidney High where I taught. I saw him with the kids and he always was very proud and encouraging. Greg and Doug worked together on the SHOF committee and almost every evening after a committee meeting Doug's name would come up...he'd said such and such, or he'd spoken too long! He certainly made an impression wherever he went and was well known and well loved. May the family and his friends know that he is now at peace and surely watching forever with pride, his family that he left behind. Another great Sidney staffer gone but never forgotten.

There is going to be a tremendous track and field meet in Heaven, and all the best runners, jumpers and throwers will be there. Doug Quinney will assign each and every one of them a nickname and encourage them to dig deep and reach for more. The hurdles will get his rapt attention, of course, and before they can start the festivities, you'll hear a warbled song that's so off key you may not recognize it.
But no one will care, because they know this man will be tough, he'll be fair, and he'll be there for each and every athlete (and others) for the long haul. And finally, he'll be dressed in red because that is "Quinney maroon".
My sincere and heartfelt sympathies to Marilyn, Tammy, and Theresa and their families, plus the extended families I know such as Ashley and Jeremy Mohler. No one can aptly describe the influence Doug had on others, but you always felt it because he made you feel good. A Hall of Famer in every respect. Salute, DQ...and thank you.
