I had just returned to Sidney from my year as an exchange student to Brazil in 1973 and dreaded having to take Regents Chemistry. Dave Pysnik made what I thought was going to be a torturous year into an exciting year of learning and exploring. He inspired the good in everyone. He will be missed by the Sidney community at large and by generations of Sidney Alumni. My condolences to his family and friends.

Does anyone catch the irony of a simple and concise obituary written for a person who has done so much for so many over such a long time? As Dave always said - "you've gotta read between the lines!" And in between these lines is so much compassion, intensity, encouragement, devotion, humility, and genuine love for his students no matter what the era. So proud to know my son Kevin follows many Sidney grads into Ithaca and in particular the Physical Therapy program. Inspiration will go on for him even though Dave can not physically talk with Kevin. I look forward to reading the memories to be shared on this site. We all miss you and thank you David Pysnik. You truly were One of a Kind.

Dave and I arrived in Sidney the same year. From that time, he has been an enthusiastic colleague and valued teacher. His energetic willingness to take on a new project will be missed. Mr.Pysnik and his family live up the street from my parents. He and his family, were so kind to his neighbors. My parents, as well as their other neighbors, were always included in family celebrations. Since I had Mr. P. for chemistry, he hadn't changed a bit. His friendly personality, willingness to help anyone at anytime, and gift to make all of those around him smile (as well as laugh uncontrollably), will be missed. My prayers go out to Gaby and her family.

Words cannot express the sadness that we all feel at the loss of such a special man. Our Class of '77 was greatly influenced by the energy, enthusiasm, and love of chemistry and teaching that Mr Pysnik exuded on a daily basis (I am still unable to say "Dave" - he thought that was incredibly funny!) Several of us went on to careers that involved Chemistry and/or Engineering and I am convinced that our love of Chemistry class had a profound influence on our choices. Mr Pysnik focused on the whole person however, not just the academic portion...he pushed us to the limit and encouraged us when we needed it. He set the example for us to follow. It's hard to imagine the heartbreak his family must be feeling...I hope that your memories of that unforgettable laugh and the many precious moments you shared will comfort you now and for the tough days ahead. God Bless you all...

I am numb over the loss of the best teacher I ever had. I still remember how he arranged a summer technical program for a couple of us to attend at RIT and he even drove all the way to Rochester just to make sure that we were doing OK in the program.
For an independent study project, I decided to make solar cells... and he quickly and miraculously scrounged up the materials, including silicon a high-temperature firing oven for me. I learned that he later became a master at finding donations for the school to use.
He inspired me to study Chemical Engineering in college, and I still remember some fellow college students being astounded when I told them some of the things we had learned and practiced in high school chemistry. They couldn't believe that we had so much experience from a public school.
Hundreds of students will mourn the loss of this great educator.

We were extremely saddened to hear of David's passing. A former TEACHER OF THE YEARS, and one of the first to receive such an accolade from his peers, David obviously touched students early in his career and throughout. His insistence on hard work allowed many a Sidney student to reflect on chemistry not only as a subject, but also as a direction in their lives after high school. His passion for his subject was only second to his fervant attempt to have his students succeed. His many summers out of the area, encouraging his students to appreciate research in the sciences was amazing. To Gabby and the children, we know you will be strong in Dave's passing.

Dave’s passing leaves a hole in our school and our community. As a colleague, he was always a spark; there was not a day he came by our school when he would not offer a smile, a kind word or a pat in the back when it was needed. We will miss his laughter, his stories, his friendly banter, and above all, his zest for life.
May God prepare Dave’s way back to his heavenly kingdom, and be with the family to offer the healing they need in this time. My prayers and thoughts are with you.

Dave was truly a gift. The image of his smile and energetic delivery standing before the dreaded periodic table is etched in my mind. He seemed to almost discover science anew as he lectured. He responded to a correct answer with a hearty "Indeed!"
Scientific calculators were a requirement for my first college science courses. In those days the HP calculators were hundreds of dollars and I just didn't have that much. Dave found a used one for me! Once you were a student of Dave's he always watched out for you.
Rest in peace Dave.

Dave was just one of those guys who made life more interesting. He was our son, Kevin's favorite and most inspriring teacher. He was the spark who entertained us at Open House, chatted with us in Sherburne at the big parade, sang and chatted at Mass and encouraged Brynn to pursue her interest in Chemistry. He invited me into his home last summer for a beer and I stayed for 2 hours talking. When I told him the folks at Ithaca College called him "crazy Dave" he howled!
I, too, will miss his very being; his presence, his laugh and his love for people.

David's joyful life touched so many of us.He brought to his role as an
Emergency Disaster Volunteer with the Salvation Army the same infectious humor and optimism
for which he was so admired in other settings.
David walked the streets of Prattsville,NY following the devastating floods this past Fall, and in the midst of that tragedy and loss
brought encouragement and renewed hope through his conversations.
A few days later in a Disaster Recovery Center, his compassion along with his sense of humor altered what could have been a discouraging
environment, to one of laughter, purpose and renewed resolve for bothclientele and agency workers alike.
Scripture describes King David in the Old Testament as a man after God's
own heart.
The David we know merits that epithet as well.
May the Lord's blessing and continued sustaining  grace rest upon his precious family.
