Obituary of Bertram C. Merkel

Bert C. Merkel Afton, NY Bert C. Merkel of Afton formerly of Valley Stream and Bellport, NY passed away Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at the Oneonta Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center. Bert was born May 5, 1927, the son of Fred and Minnie Merkel. He was predeceased by his parents, sister Dorothy Wensley and brother Fred. He served with the Maritime Service and Coast Guard during WWII when valor was a common virtue. After the war the married his high school sweetheart Elma enjoying life together for 64 years. They were blessed with four children, Bob Merkel of Ouaquaga, NY, Bonnie and Glenn Rider, of Smith Falls, Canada, Tom and Lorraine Merkel of Phoenix, AZ, Terri and Eric Bergskaug, Afton. 14 Grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren many nieces and nephews. Bert was employed as a Lieutenant with the Garden City Fire Department for 30 years. He was a volunteer for 60 years with the Valley Stream Fire Department, LI receiving the award of honorary chief. His life exemplified what is referred to as the greatest generation. The values of hard work, character, loyalty, humility and dedication to God and family were what shaped his life. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, love of travel, camping in the great outdoors, devotion to the fire dept. and putting others before himself. His wisdom will be missed by all who knew and loved him. At Bert's request there will be a celebration of his life at the convenience of his family.
