Obituary of Raymond Ulm

Raymond Ulm Sidney, NY Raymond Ulm, 69, of St. Augustine, FL and a former Sidney resident, died Sunday, November 20, 2011 at the Bailey Family Center hospice facility in St. Augustine, FL. Ray passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife and children. He had courageously battled malignant melanoma since 2001. Ray was born August 22, 1942 in Queens, NYC, NY to Florence (Mahnken) and Francis J. Ulm, both deceased. He has 2 brothers and 4 sisters: Frank Ulm (deceased) of Oneonta, Marie Poole (deceased) of Pompano Beach, FL, Florence Boyle of Oneonta, Bill Ulm of Seminole, FL (formerly of Oneonta), Claire Sluzenski of North Wales, PA and Irene Jervis of Oneonta. After graduation from Gilbertsville High School in 1960, Ray served in the U.S. Air Force. Upon discharge, he completed the bricklayers apprentice program in 1965 and worked in the trade until his retirement Sept. 1, 2004. Ray married Elaine Payeur on Sept. 11, 1965 at St. Mary's Church in Oneonta, NY. They met in Seville, Spain in 1964 where both Raymond and SM/Sgt Paul E. Payeur, his wife's father, were stationed by the Air Force. The couple lived in several locations during their 46 year marriage, most recently moving in Dec. 2010 from Ritton Street in Sidney to St. Augustine, Florida where they had planned to live together for many years viewing the wildlife along the Intracoastal Waterway from their home along the Matanzas River. Ray enjoyed the game of golf since he learned to play in 1966 and was a long time member of the Sidney Golf & Country Club. He was the Club Champion in 1989 and continued to play until this year when his illness prevented it. He is survived by his wife Elaine of St. Augustine, FL, and his two children Cyndee Van Siclen of Jacksonville, FL, her husband Paul and their two sons, Zachary, 11, and Andrew, 9, along with son Paul Ulm of Kannapolis, NC and his fiance Laura Tucker. Ray loved being a grandfather and enjoyed spending time with his grandsons. He enjoyed walking, reading and watching sports on TV, finding the combination of walking then reading on the beach until sunset his preferred activity. Friends are invited to call on Sunday, November 27, 2011 from 2:00-4:00pm and 7:00-9:00pm at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St. Sidney, NY 13838. Funeral services will take place at 11:00am on Monday, November 28th at the funeral chapel with Fr. Gordon Polenz, pastor officiating. A reception will immediately follow the service at the Sidney Golf and Country Club. Burial will take place at 2:00pm in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Oneonta.
