Ruth Emma Van Voorhis passed away at the Norwich Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on Friday, July 8, 2011. Ruth was born in Wettingen, Switzerland on October 27, 1918 to Albert and Emma Egli, Sr., who predeceased her. She was predeceased by her husband, Frederic E. Van Voorhis, her sister, Grace B. Anderson, and her brother, Albert Egli, Jr. She is survived by her son, Robert C. Van Voorhis of Austin, TX and her brother, Henry (Ellen) Egli. She is also survived by her nephews: Gary (Kate) Egli, Denis (Sandra) Egli and Ronald Egli, as well as her nieces: Janis (Albert) Bravo and Valerie (John) Wittkamper.
Ruth came to Sidney, NY in 1925, where her father Albert Egli, Sr. was employed as factory manager for a 12 man startup business, then known as the Scintilla Magneto Company. She graduated from Sidney Central School in 1937 and was very proud to have been the editor of the "Reflector" for that class. Following graduation, Ruth went to work for Scintilla as a secretary in the sales department. Later, she was the secretary for another startup company, The Egli Machine Co., which is still an active Sidney business under the leadership of her nephew, Denis Egli.
The family wishes to express their gratitude for the care and understanding given to Ruth during her long residence at the United Methodist Home and later at the Norwich Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Friends are invited to call from 12:00noon until 1:00pm on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St. Sidney, NY 13838. Funeral services will follow at 1:00pm at the funeral chapel with Rev. Patricia Robinson, pastor of the First Congregational Church of Sidney, officiating. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the First Congregational Church, 1 Bridge St. Sidney, NY 13838.
