Madeline was our cousin and best friend to my sister, Gloria.
I grew up admiring the beautiful lady with the long red hair. Over the years as grew up and started my own family Madeline was always there to help celebrate the events of our families. I've loved and looked up to both George and Madeline. I will miss her smile and lovely letters she'd write during the holidays.
May they both RIP with our Lord and family in heaven.
My sympathy to all the family for the loss of your parents.
I would have loved to be at the viewing to see all their family, however Covid has kept me at home. My love to you all,
Marion Taylor

Dear Mertz Family,
If God sent angels to walk amongst us, Madeline Anna was one of them. I remember your mother as the gentle, soft-spoken neighbor mom down the street with a smile on her face for whomever she met, yet her presence spoke volumes. May you find comfort in each other and know the peace and happiness she must feel to be reunited with her lifelong ride or die.
My sincere condolences and God Bless you all,
Mary T. Mattingly

Madeline was the heart of her family, and her family was everything to her. It is the end of an era, but the family spirit was so strong because of Madeline, that I am sure that the family will stay together and continue to be together.
So many times as a priest, I have known of married couples dying within a short time of each other. This includes my own grandparents. I think that this says something about the strength of their marriage which God maintained for so many years.
George and Madeline Mertz were the rocks not only of St. John Parish but of Bainbridge. Their presence will be missed by many.

I am so very sorry for your loss. Whenever I think of attending St. John's, I think about the Mertz family in the front on the left, opposite our family on the right. May you find comfort in shared memories with family and friends.
