While beginning the emotional process of cleaning Mom's house of 60 years of memories, the following Tri-Town News article from 1984 was discovered for which her obituary so appropriately reflected. Mom was very proud of her home being included in this important program, especially given the house was on the path between the Elementary and High School. She was, and still is, a guardian Angel to all of us. God bless her always and may she be celebrating her new life in His Kingdom of Heaven. - Tom, Todd & Tad

Shirley was my babysitter when I was 6 months old to 4 and a half years old. She has always been “My Shirley.” She was so special and the sweetest, most generous lady I knew. I met my first ever best friend at her house. I remember when I would kick and scream and cry because I never wanted to leave her house. I always had the most fun there. I remember fooling around out back running down the neighbor’s driveway and I scraped my elbow and she gave me a bandaid I didn’t take off for 2 days (ew) because it came from her and it had a cool design on it. After I started school and was no longer able to go to her house for daycare, I’d visit multiple times a year, we would send her Christmas cards, call on holidays and each other’s birthdays, and I would make some of my school projects for her. The last time I visited her was in September of 2023, right after a volleyball game that I had in Bainbridge, and just before passing her street I asked my mom “can we stop there” because I hadn’t seen or heard from her in almost a year. And there My Shirley was, sweeping the porch. She didn’t quite remember my mom, as her name is also Tammy, so she got a little confused and at times thought it was her daughter, but once she got a closer look of me she knew me right away. And that was the most heartwarming thing ever. We went inside and I told her alllllll of my life updates. We went through the pictures she has of me, and she pointed out all of the gifts I’d given her throughout the years. She still has the paper bunny I made her for Easter in primary school! It’s sits right next to the entryway of her kitchen. And right next to it was a picture of me and her in a plastic picture holder I made in 6th grade with a personal note on the back of it. I think there was still a Christmas card or 2 on her fridge still from us. I’m in 10th grade now, and I go to Oxford. I have gained so many more accomplishments that I will tell her about one day. She’d be so proud of me. I know she will watch over me and all of you and protect us all, like she always had. I now will hold the Mickey Mouse blanket she gave me after I stopped going to her house for daycare. It will forever sit by the stuffed bunny she gave me for Easter of 2014. It will remind me of all the memories we had and I promise that they will be in my head all the time. Everytime I look at that bunny I think of My Shirley and I will never forget it or her. I love you so much My Shirley. The sky is looking gorgeous just like you. Every night. I will see you again someday.❤️ ❤️

Elizabeth, what an amazing tribute & so many wonderful memories to hold of our Mom. I recall every time visiting Mom asking "so, who is this person again who gave you the paper bunny", and she would point to the picture. She refused to store the bunny in a drawer. She was SO proud of it, and of you! Thank you for the kind words and remembrance. You very eloquently described our Mom - a loving, caring and compassionate women who always gave freely of her time and her heart. - Tom, Todd and Tad

Todd & Family:
Our condolences on your loss.
I remember your Mom as being a kind lady with an infectious smile; especially during my stay at your home in Bainbridge to help build the deck 40 years ago. Her delicious grilled pork chop recipe has been replicated many times over the years, since she walked me through the ingredients that week long ago.
Treasure your memories of her.
Love,
Eric & Bette Kuersteiner

Eric and Bette. Thank you for your kind comments. Eric to the day she left her house for the last time my Mom was so proud of her deck. You were the master builder behind it. I was your laborer. Amazing it has survived the upstate NY winters for over 40 years. Thank you for being such a great friend.

Well, young lady, I walked in your house a couple days ago, and for the first time in 9 months you weren't sitting there eagerly awaiting my arrival. Although I'll miss you terribly, I know your in a better place. I am very grateful that someone recommended me to Tom to help you. When I couldn't the first time a few years ago, my sister did. Then when I received another call from Todd· last year, I was now available. You always told me I came into your life when you needed me most and I truly believe that we needed each other This was how I became your Sweet Angel! I'll forever cherish our days spent laughing, taking rides, sitting in the sun on the porch just talking and watching kids walk by. I'm so happy you enjoyed going to Thanksgiving dinner with us and your Christmas tree!! Memories I'll always cherish. Thank you for being like a 2nd mom, just like you told me I was like a 2nd daughter. Love, Kathy, Dave and Evan

Amy ... thank you for making the trip with others from the PA family to Mom's services. Your presence was comforting to us, and know that our Mom always thought of you and loved you like a daughter. As you know, Mom also had a special bond with your Dad (brother) and Mom (special sister-in-law), as we all did with them and you and your siblings. Tom and I always enjoyed our Summer stays with your family in PA during our youth. Love to you all and God Bless always.

To the Fletcher family: I am sad to hear of your mom’s passing. I am truly grateful for the short amount of time I had with her from 2015-2017 when I lived across the street. We were able to reconnect and enjoy each other’s company for an occasional dinner. I will cherish those days forever. Much love and friendship, Loraine Flyzik❤️

To the entire Fletcher family-we send out our sincere condolences to you all on the death of Shirley. Your home and house, was one we all knew growing up as the Fletcher's and Shirley was know to all as the lady who took care of so many children. When I worked the summer playground program she would drive up with a car full and drop them all off for a couple of hours. Later, as a new early childhood teacher we were able to chat about child development, and later still, as a long time customer of ours, she always loved to share family news. She had a special place in her heart for all of you, but even more, still had enough room for all the children who she cared for over the years. I don't know how she continued to do it for so many years. We were all so fortunate to have her in our lives growing up. Thanks for sharing her with the rest of us. We will be thinking of you all as you go through this difficult week.

Dear Aunt Shirley, You were always the sweetest and most loving aunt that Rob and I could ask for. Our childhood visits to your wonderful home in Bainbridge was the warmest place I could ever imagine. All of the silly shenanigans with Tom, Todd ,Tad and Tammy were some of the best memories we have.
I love you and will miss you deeply!

Kristen, whether Russell family reunions at Grandma's house on Pearl Street, Russell family gatherings in PA or gatherings at the Fletcher homestead on Kirby Street, whenever us cousins got together there was bound to be alot of fun and laughter (and "shenanigans"). Thanks for your reflection of our Mom. Love you always - Tom, Todd and Tad

Our family is so sorry to hear of your loss. Shirley was a wonderful woman. She cared for my husband and I back in our youth days as we attended her house after school and on summer days. I met my husband at Shirley’s, we shared our first kiss running to her bathroom and giving one another a peck only years later, to be married. Shirley helped me with my speech impediment when I was struggling with my “s”’s and boy did she love her soap operas!!! She will be very much missed. Every time I would see her she just would have a smile on her face. She can never be replaced and will always be a part of our love story. With sincere condolences, Chad and Jennifer Beames and family.
