Please share a memory of Barbara to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Barbara M. Patten, 86, of Bainbridge, NY passed away due to complications from pneumonia on October 22, 2023 at Wilson Memorial Hospital with her family by her side. Barbara was born August 24, 1937, daughter of the late Alvin and Alvina (Urvis) Whitmer in Yonkers, NY. She married Edward A. Patten on March 23, 1957 in New Hyde Park, NY. He predeceased her December 6, 2006, after 49 years of marriage. She was also predeceased by her daughter Kimberlie A. Gamble and grandson Jacob Gamble.
Barbara was a devoted stay at home mother before working at Lockwood's Department Store in Bainbridge. She then worked at the Hunt Insurance Agency and Gates Cole Insurance Agency in Sidney, NY. After retirement from the Insurance business, she worked part-time at Price Chopper and Kmart, all in Sidney. She also managed the Open Air Market in Bainbridge along with her devoted husband, for many years.
Barbara is survived by: two sisters, Dorothy Whitmer and Joyce (Whitmer) Lacey; four sons and daughters-in-law: Edward A. Patten, Jr. and wife, Donna, Pittsburgh, PA, Brian E. Patten and wife, Annette, Greene, NY, Kevin J. Patten and wife, Penny, Bainbridge NY, Alan W. Patten and wife, Eva, South New Berlin, NY; daughter and son-in-law, Linda M. Stafford and husband, Fred, Bainbridge NY; 16 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Barbara enjoyed listening to classic rock and country music. She was an enthusiastic sports fan, especially golf and her favorite New York Yankees. She loved bowling and took interest in her grandchildren's sports. She loved watching game shows and was a wiz at Jeopardy and crossword puzzles. She was an avid book reader. She always looked forward to her grandchildren's visits, especially all dressed up in their Halloween costumes. Most importantly she enjoyed seeing the excitement in their faces as they opened the Christmas presents that filled her living room.
She will be thoroughly missed by her family and the people she met along the way who always remarked how sweet she was. It might possibly be related to her insatiable love of Nabisco Chips Ahoy Chunky Chocolate Chip Cookies!
The family greatly appreciates the wonderful care she received at home by aides, Willow Point Rehabilitation and Nursing Home, and Wilson Memorial Hospital.
