So very sorry to hear that Father Gordon has died. So many fond memories I will cherish. Father Gordon welcomed our family into the church when we moved to Sidney years ago. Rest in peace Father Gordon.

Fr. G was a great priest, a good friend. As we walked, almost every weekday morning for almost 20 years, I learned a lot about Fr. G. His likes and dislikes. I knew most of his homilies by heart as he would practice on me during our walks. I, and my family, will miss him dearly.

Sidney was very lucky when Fr Gordon was assigned to our parish. He built a wonderful community under his leadership. He was more than just a parish priest, he was a friend to everyone, young and old. We were lucky enough to have him travel to Ocean City MD, twice, to officiate the weddings of both of our children. Our family enjoyed many happy times with him and will never forget him.

Father Gordon was an amazing priest. My family used to go to church at St. Ambrose and then Sacred Heart because he was just so different than other priests. It never felt like you were being preached too, it was always more conversational and inclusive.
He was a really great priest and a good man. He will be missed by everyone who ever had the pleasure to be in his presence.

Father Gordon was a treasure here in Sidney. He was committed to his Parish and the community. He was welcoming and a pleasure to talk to. When Walt passed away during the busiest week on the liturgical calendar, Fr. Gordon found time to visit. That visit meant a great deal to me. Deepest sympathy to the Polenz family for the loss of a very special member.

We have known Fr Gordon since he came to Sidney in 1986. Through the years we came to respect him as our priest and love him as a friend. Many great times were shared in both Sidney and Florida. Father presided when our two daughters were married, baptized all of our grandchildren and gave First Communion to four of them. In 1987 he helped Art and several others join the Church. Father had noticed they were always at Mass but never received Communion. His personally invited them and many accepted. They are now able to pull participate at Mass. Father had various jobs prior to his ordination - we all know of them because he included his life experiences in his homilies. This "worldly knowledge" helped him to connect with parishioners, and made him a better priest - a peoples' priest. Father Gordon will be missed, but never forgotten. May God welcome him to "Heaven's Buffet"

What a beautiful tribute to our precious Father Gordon. Rosemarie and Art you conveyed so poignantly the strong impact Father had on so many of our lives. He certainly was a “people’s priest” and we were very blessed to have had him as our spiritual leader for so many years. Our condolences to his family and friends.

I had enormous respect for Father Gordon and enjoyed his humor as well as his humility. From the “Fighting Irish” jacket to his collection of pigs. He conducted classes just for me during my conversion in 2005 - we discussed as much about the Brooklyn Dodgers as the Bible. Made it a comfortable process.. He started the modern era at Sacred Heart and I’m sure his Harvest Festival will live on. Father also was especially supportive during a family crisis without being judgmental. Rest peacefully Speedy G. Your work here was more valuable than you know.

Our little community was very lucky to have Father Gordon for the many years he led Sacred Heart Parish. He had a great way of speaking to his parishioners as equals. Always accepting, understanding, and funny. He made the church attendance requirement for high school students, leading up to our Confirmation, easy to look forward to. I really enjoyed listening to his homilies because he always added personal, relatable stories to them. My family always referred to him as “Speedy G” or “Flash Gordon” because his masses were predictably 45 minutes and rarely ever went over that time. Thank you for giving my so many years to our Sidney area community. You will be deeply missed, Father Gordon.

For over forty years I had the privilege of working with Father Gordon as one of the organists at Sacred Heart in Sidney. Although I am Methodist, I always felt part of a wonderful “second church family” under his leadership. I consider it an honor to have been a part of working along side one truly called by God for His Purpose. My sincere condolences to you in your loss of a very special loved one.

To many, you were known as Father Gordon, but to your family you were Uncle Gordie to the kids and Gordie to your brother and sisters. We will always remember the great family gatherings we had, especially those Christmases at the rectory in Sidney. It was fun to hear the brothers and sisters reminisce about their childhood memories. We know that many of those stories found their way into your Sunday homily. Gordie thank you for all the memories, you will be missed as a brother, uncle and cousin. Love Jim and Adrienne

Father Gordon was the greatest with the ‘kids”, whether at children’s liturgy or, they grew , being altar servers, readers, musicians ….

Q: What 3 words best describe Fr. Gordon and why?
A: Entertaining, humorous and determined were the three best words used to describe my Uncle. It sure is a sad day knowing I will not hear another great story from his childhood or what joke he has to tell. Love you Uncle Gordie and will miss you dearly…catch you on the flip side- Jena.

Oh Father how does one begin! Thank you for your years of dedication and faith to the parish. Thank you for always making folks feel welcome and especially for encouraging the young people to join in with such wonderful sermons, activities and relationships.
My children grew in their faith because of you.
My favorite part of the year was the Christmas Eve children’s mass with the birthday cake and greetings in many languages.
May you live eternally in Paradise.

The first time I met father Gordon was in the Sidney hospital after giving birth to my second son Alex. Always smiling. Father Gordon always tried to accommodate his parishioners. My boys were baptized Greek Orthodox but father Gordon allowed them to participate in the Catholic sacraments. Thanks for everything , we will miss you papa G.

Father Gordon gave the best homilies. Always a story with the Gospel. Knew about his love for the pigs, called seeds, stories of his uncles can go on and on. He was a friend. We moved to Fla. on the east coast, he was on the west coast but kept in touch on Christmas. A wonderful man.

Q: What was one of your favorite qualities of Fr. Gordon?
A: I knew Father Gordon for the entire time I lived in Sidney. He officiated at my daughter Courtney’s wedding. In addition, he baptized four of my six grandchildren. Father Gordon was the best pastor I have ever been associated with. I always told him I could give his sermons, after hearing them recycled so much.
