Obituary of Datus Hartwell

Datus Hartwell, Jr., 94, of Unadilla, NY, passed away December 22, 2021 in Drums, PA, after a brief illness. Datus was born in Deposit, NY to Datus, Sr. and Genny (Gardner) Hartwell on September 25, 1927. Junior served his country from 1945 to 1947 in the United States Navy Seabee's on the island of Papua New Guinea. He worked at many jobs, but most of his career was driving milk tanker for Whitaker Trucking and Coventry Leasing. He will be missed by his three sons: Thomas (Sharon) Hartwell of Martinburg, WV, Terry Hartwell of Drums, PA and Ron (Gina) Hartwell of Royal Palm Beach, FL; also three step children: Judy (Robert) Frank of Greene, NY, Dixie (Robert) Pflug of Conklin, NY and Jeff (Allison) Poltz of Johnson City, NY; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jenny (Pearl) Hartwell on September 11, 2005. He was the last of his siblings, two sisters, Hilda Clark and Elma Miles, and five brothers, Leon, Benjamin, Carl, Clifford and Kenneth. He was also preceded by his daughter-in-law, Sue Klekowski and grandson, Shane Hartwell. He took great pleasure in gardening, growing his own food. He enjoyed boating and fishing as a pastime, but mostly enjoyed socializing at the local taverns. Friends may call from 11:00am-12:30pm on Thursday, January 6, 2022 at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St. Sidney, NY 13838. A funeral service will follow calling hours. Burial will take place in Greenlawn Cemetery, Bainbridge, NY.
