Dominick "Punchy" August, of Sidney, NY and formerly of Crystal River, FL, passed away peacefully in his home under the care of Hospice August 9th, 2010. Dominick was born in Schenectady, NY on April 2nd, 1921, son of Dominick and Jennie August. He attended Draper High School. Dominick joined Camp S-100 of the Civilian Conservation Corps. in Masonville, NY from 1938 to 1941. He was very proud to be a part of the CCCs and remained a lifetime member. He was an amateur boxer and won many matches. He taught many of the kids in Sidney to box.
He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in July of 1942. He served in the Pacific and attained the rank of Master Sergeant. He returned to Sidney in January of 1946 and eventually took a job at Wadsworth and Sons where he was manager until he retired in 1982. In June 1946, Dominick married Roberta Dalrymple. He was a sports enthusiast and played on the Sidney Cardinal football team in the late 40s. He was an avid golfer and scored 5 holes in one in his lifetime.
Dominick is survived by his wife, Bobbie of Sidney; two daughters, Jennie Watson of Sidney and Nikki VanVoris of Sidney; three grandchildren and four great grandchildren; a brother Richard of Lisle, IL; special goddaughter, Nancy Gunn, close friend Scott Morrow and his family and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by five brothers, four sisters and a nephew.
According to his wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral service. Private graveside services will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family. Friends and family are invited to attend a gathering on Wednesday, August 18th from 2:00-4:00pm at the Sidney Golf and Country Club.
