Obituary of Holger Striegler
Holger "Corky" Striegler
On June 10, 2021 Corky died peacefully in the very home he was born in, surrounded by family and the animals he so dearly loved. Corky was born in Bainbridge, the son of Danish immigrants Fred and Ingeborg Striegler. He was very proud to be a first-generation Danish American. He was one of the final members of a dying breed of dairy farmers in the hills of Bainbridge.
Corky's greatest love was for his family, and the farm and animals who shared the hilltop with him. He spent over 80 years of his life working and running the family dairy farm. In his early years he would often be seen helping other farmers with plowing, seeding or harvesting, and Corky and his father were one of the first local farmers to have a tractor and bailer. From the Susquehanna River to the Chenango River, there are not many hay fields in the area that he didn't work. Corky worked for the town of Bainbridge and would tell stories of hours behind the wheel of trucks and snowplows. For many years, a cup hanging in the picture window would notify town crews that they were welcome to stop for refreshments.
He loved neighborhood softball games and picnic breakfasts at the pond. There is no better way to learn life's lessons of teamwork and doing work the right way, the first time, then with a day on the farm or with a round of softball. Anyone who knew him, loved him, despite his Danish temperament. He was always teaching and sharing his wisdom. He was a walking farmers' almanac. The whole neighborhood was his family. Once you were a part of his family you were family for life. He touched so many lives. He loved playing dominoes with his children, grandchildren, and neighbors and found great joy the last several years in teaching the next generation all about farming and red tractors.
Corky was predeceased by his parents, his brother, Harold (Shirley) Striegler, sisters, Gloria (Ronald) Smith, Betty Striegler and Sonja Striegler.
He is survived by his children, Dale Striegler, Vicki (Richard) Lamoreaux, Norma (Tim) Tansey and Kay Striegler, along with several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, Danish and American cousins as well as many dear, dear neighbors.
