I was saddened to hear of Bernie's passing. My condolences to Bernie's family.
Bernie was a classmate at EC. With our last names starting with V, we were in the same homeroom throughout high school and maybe Jr High; but that I don't remember, We also shared some classes together. After all these years I can still remember so many specific events, specially in gym, Reformed Doc. class with Mr. Miller and our Senior class trip to Washington DC. There Bernie was in the adjoining hotel room, we had doors that opened the 2 rooms together. There was not much sleep that night. I remember Bernie taking his own side trip to an Army/Navy store and buying a lot of things, One item with a folding shovel.
I had not seen Bernie since HS. With the move to NY State he must of started using facebook a little. I enjoyed his postings.
Bernie, thank you for your service. Rest In Pease.

It saddened me to read of Bernie's passing, I was a class mate of his and also a friend, and I don't believe I've seen him since we graduated, but you know how it is once a friend always a friend and bonds are not easily broken. I remember him as quick witted with a great sense of humor, even out of control / over the top at times but that is what drew many of us to him. I remember being over his house one day and he pulled out his pellet gun, there was a bird sitting on the front edge of their basket hoop Bernie took aim, fired and the bird fell backwards....nothing but net! Bernie turned toward me and quickly said, "TWO POINTS" ! My heartfelt sympathies to the Vander Weert and extended family and friends, my God comfort all of you as you grieve the loss of one of His wonderfully unique creations, Bernie!
