I’ll remember Dick Vernon as the even-tempered golf coach whose subtle sense of humor made each golf team he coached very special at the end of year sports banquet.
Through the grapevine I heard of his same approach as a science teacher. Those are the kinds of people we want in our schools!
Sympathies to the Vernon family.

Good people are remembered; Mr. Vernon will never be forgotten. I didn't know him well but all of my children had him and I know he sincerely did his best to reach out and help every one of them. He always had a quick smile and hello no matter where I saw him be it Great American, the hardware store or taking a walk passing our home. Afton Central School was fortunate to have him share his knowledge, character and caring with all of our students. Fortunate are those who took heart to his words and experiences of life he shared with his students.

Mr. Vernon had a profound effect on the direction of my education. My love for science transferred to one of my sons who is currently studying neuroscience, specifically to do studies on Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. I know Mr. Vernon indirectly played a role in this. He will always be remembered with the utmost respect and fondness. Deepest condolences on your loss.

To Coach Richard Vernon (Fond Memories),
In the spring of 1975, I was a junior in High School and a member of the Afton golf team. We had a great team and had gone undefeated in all our matches. Back then the golf season was in the spring. At the end of the season all the golf teams in our league played one final 18 hole match to determine the championship for the year. It did not matter if your team was undefeated or not. This meet crowned the champs.
The week before the match Mr. Vernon drove us to the course for a practice round.
It was to be held at the Windsor Golf Course that year. On the trip over, we were fooling around, laughing, and expressing our feelings for our girl friends. High School stuff! Needless to say, coach was not happy. We proceeded to play horribly that day, not good. He told us to not blow this opportunity. We had beaten everyone in the league that year. The next week our game day scores: Dick Rivanera((69),Hoby Shupe (70), Steve Gaydorus (70), Matt Ceplo (79), Dave Dascano (79), for a total 18 hole score of 367. A record that stood for over 20 years. Thank you coach Vernon for your dedication, inspiration, & wonderful memories. Sincerely, Steve Gaydorus..

So sorry to hear of Dick's passing. He was a great guy. Went to school with Dick and we were on the wrestling team together. I live in the Harpursville area and used to see Dick at athletic events when my kids participated in HS sports, in the bank, at Dr. Dygerts. It was always good to see him and talk with him. Your family is in my prayers.

To the Vernon Family- I was rather shocked to see Mr. Vernon's Obit online, so quick, as no one let me know. I have known the Vernon's for nearly 50 years, I was 8 years old when they bought their house from my father, Jerry Brackett.
I also had Mr. Vernon for a teacher way back, he was very strict, but he needed to be, as some kids needed to hear and see him that way, he was a great teacher, we were also neighbors for many years when my 2 kids were young, living next door
I was honored to help out at their home Feb 24-Nov3rd, 17. Thank You
Cindi, Shanalin, and Darien Heath

Mrs. Vernon, Ted, and Libby,
I had Mr. Vernon for 9th grade biology and boy was he a great instructor, very tough, but because of his class, my college class was much easier. I remember when Ted was born, he was so happy and proud. I last saw him about ? 15 years ago when I was in Afton. My son got to meet him, which was great. I wish I could be there Tuesday, but live 4 hours away, so not really possible, but my thoughts are with you all. Ted....if you ever want to get rid of any of my dad's guns that your dad bought...let me know!
