Dear Carol and family (including the CH Landers family),
It's been over twenty years since I moved from Bainbridge, and as a Presbyterian minister I have worked with many funeral directors, but Jim still stands as one of the best: dignified but not "stuffy" -- he knew when a bit of humor was exactly right -- and his caring for all involved at the time of profound loss was evident in the way that he and the staff performed their service. I thought enough of Jim and CH Landers that I had instructions to my executor that I wanted Landers to handle my own funeral. Fortunately, I have excellent funeral directors (husband and wife) in my current and forever hometown. But my gratitude to Jim still continues. Heaven is richer for his presence.

I was so sorry to hear of Jim's passing, just saw him at SHOF dinner and he looked great. I remember walking by the Barnhart home after school and stopping to look at their pet monkey that they had in a cage in their back yard. We just lived up behind them on DeWitt. Jim was a few years older than me so we never really played any games together but he use to come out when I would stop to see the monkey. He certainly was there for tons of Sidney families in their hour of need and he always knew what to say. May your memories help sustain you through this difficult time. God bless.

Hey Jim-
You won the race. You beat the rest of us silly mortals to the finish line. Yeah, some others got there ahead of you, and may you all be laughing...with your laugh being the most recognizable of all.
But please know this. While you were a piece of God's dust on His earth, you fulfilled His calling, honored your heritage and upbringing, and brought incredible comfort to all those you touched in their time of grief for so many years in our hometown.
You blew off praise in your humble way. Modesty was a driver for you. You lived a proper life.
Our prayers are for Carol and your family - those left behind. May your family be comforted by having had such an intimate relationship with such a great guy. May God bring comfort and His Grace to them over time.

Jimmy Barnhart was a mentor to me. As a rookie pastor serving the Presbyterian Churches in East Guilford and Unadilla from 1978-1984, Jimmy filled the void between book learning and actually caring for families when death intruded on their lives. Seminary taught me little when it came to funerals, Jimmy taught me a lot!
