I was saddened to hear Bernie passed away. He did many things for many people. One thing that stands in my mind was that he hired Sidney graduates to work in the school.I was one of them, and for that I will always be grateful. He believed in the Sidney Community.
Condolences to his family. Rest in peace Bernie.

So many memories of Mr. Theobald. But most were away from school, spending endless hours at the Theobald household, in the backyard, in the driveway shooting hoops, "stealing home runs" before they hit the garage roof, and playing cards til all hours in the trailer in the driveway. I never once saw Mr. Theobald raise a voice or sweat "the small (large) stuff", even when we broke the iron downstairs. He was a dad at school too everyone. I never saw him differently.

Sabina and I were saddened to learn that Bernie has died. We'll remember him fondly for his calm demeanor and his interest in all students during the years they were under his supervision and afterwards.
I enjoyed working with him as a colleague and as principal.
We add our sympathy to each member of the family. We were pleased to learn that there had been a reunion of the entire family (rare as families grow and age) for his birthday. We wish that that time together will ease the pain of this gathering.

Maureen and I were so saddened to hear of the loss of this wonderful man...a great educator, a special family man and a dear friend. He was on my hiring committee when I applied for the job back in 1966. Even
Dr. Lynch was only in his second year so, this former Social Studies background administrator carried a lot weight. Later when Maureen decided to join our staff as an almost daily substitute teacher k-12, he was very instrumental in her first few days in the classroom. His methods and suggestions are almost a legend category in our family...both his humor and skills showed my wife some of the wonderful insights she would use throughout her almost thirty years of subbing. Bernie was such a kind fellow and I was honored to have him "cover" for me as MY stub when my father passed away. He was then retired but his skills as a teacher had not faded. I was SO pleased and honored to have him cover for me.
Maureen and I are so sad that we cannot join in the celebration of such a wonderful life. We are finishing up our late winter visit to Florida as I write this so deserved tribute. Bernie did so much for our school district during his career in Sidney. He also earned the respect of all of us for his fatherly and spousal concerns for the two families he so carefully and thoughtfully took under his wing. We hope his family understands the respect the Abbots have for this very special man in our lives.

Lonnie, Jason and I are so saddened to learn that we have lost Bernie Theobald. I spent 50 years in education and worked in other school districts besides Sidney, and never did I encounter a middle school (formerly junior high) principal who was more intelligent, caring, tireless and dedicated. Bernie was a trusted friend, a confidant, a wonderful colleague and above all a great man.
To his family I wish you the best as you stop to honor Bernie in your various ways and to keep his teaching and his spirit alive through your own accomplishments and memories. It is a sad time, but also a time to be thankful that we had Bernie in our lives.

They always said that junior high / middle school years are among the toughest to be a principal. Mr. Theobald (we 50-somethings still show the respect) had just the right touch for that task.
Stern but extremely open-minded and empathetic, he recognized the good in us all. A favorite memory has to be when the Student Council drafted a letter, published in the school newspaper with concerns and requests to make the school better, including a pay phone. Not only did we get his reply in the NEXT edition of the paper (and yes we got the pay phone), he ended with the spelling lesson that has stayed with me: "Remember, principal in this case ends with 'p-a-l' which is how you should view me."
Bernie Theobald was indeed, a pal for life. Hundreds of Sidney students will never ever forget him. My family's sympathies to the entire family.

Bernie was always such a calm and cool man in all of my experiences with him. He was a gentle and caring principal to work with..never judging; always helpful. He certainly left his mark on the Sidney community in so many ways and will be remembered fondly. May his family find peace and keep the many special memories close at this time of grief and beyond.
