Obituary of Sofie Christine Barlow

Sofie Christine Barlow Unadilla, NY Sofie Christine Barlow, 92 of Unadilla, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at her home. Sofie was born on July 8, 1917, daughter of the late Lars Peter and Johanna (Jokumsen) Sorensen in Brooklyn, NY. Sofie, lovingly referred to as 'Chris' by many of her friends and family, attended Suffolk County Community College to become an accountant. For many years, she worked as an auditor for the State of New York in the Unemployment Tax Division, retiring in 1979. In 1936, Sofie married Dario Giammatteo, but they later divorced. On September 3, 1955, Sofie was married to Thomas P. Barlow in Springfield Gardens, NY. Tom and Sofie shared fifty years of loving marriage together before Tom's passing on December 15, 2005. Sofie was a dedicated member of the United Methodist Church of Sidney since 1981. She enjoyed weaving and knitting. She was a loving wife and mother, and grandmother to many. She was deeply loved and will be truly missed. Sofie is survived by: 3 Sons: Neil Giammatteo and his wife, Pat of Gansevoort, NY Robert Giammatteo of Unadilla Gerald Giammatteo of Yaphank, NY 9 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and 2 great, great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Tom, Sofie was predeceased by her young daughter, Eloise Giammatteo, in 1942. A memorial service for Sofie will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Sofie's name may be directed to the United Methodist Church, 12 Liberty Street Sidney, NY 13838.
