Florence Miller
Sidney, NY
Florence Fisk Miller ( Flossie), age 84 passed on to eternal life on March 10, 2014 at her home.
She was born in her grandmother's home on July 15, 1929, Town of Butternuts, to Theron and Carrie (Gage) Fisk. Flossie's stepfather, Wallace Taylor helped to raise her from a very early age.
Flossie spent her early years in East Guilford. She graduated from Sidney Central School with the Class of 1947. After high school, she worked at McLaury's Pharmacy, Wade's Pharmacy and Kent's Five and Dime Store all in Sidney.
She married the love of her life, Victor Miller on November 24, 1948. They enjoyed 61 years together, until Vic passed away in April 2010. Together, they raised 3 daughters, enjoyed their 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, they enjoyed some traveling, especially their trip to Hawaii in 1988 and several trips to Myrtle Beach, Virginia and Florida. There were many fun summer vacations spent with Vic and the girls camping in a small pop-up camper at Raquette Lake.
Flossie stayed home to raise her family for many years. In 1963, she began working at Pearl Street Elementary School as lunchroom aide, and later became a teacher's aide. Many Sidney School children remember Mrs. Miller and her whistle in the lunchroom. For 17 years she loved helping elementary age children in learning, but most especially with their reading.
Flossie loved to bowl, and she was the secretary of her bowling league for several years. She never drove a car but found ways to serve as homeroom mother for her daughters' classes and as assistant Brownie and Girl Scout Leader. She was also involved with the Parent Teacher Association and collected for various community organizations during their fundraising. She was actively involved with organizing the Sidney Class of 1947 reunions throughout the years.
Flossie is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law: Vicki and David Kulze, Cheryl and David Sofra and John DeMatteo. Her daughter Brenda DeMatteo, predeceased her in May 2003.
Also surviving are her grandchildren and their families, Matthew and Molly DeMatteo and their children Leah, Emma and Benjamin; Johanna and Jason Burts and their son Peyton; Jenny Rudock and her children Joshua and Emily; Maureen and Russ McCormick, and their sons Dylan and Ryan; Michael and Carol Dombrowski and their sons Austin and Collin; Patrick and Melissa Dombrowski; Victoria Sofra. A grandson Brent DeMatteo predeceased her in February 1988.
