I think it was 5 years or so ago, I called him and asked how long he'd been a member of the Afton FD. In a proud voice, he said "17 years!" Then he asked me how long I had been a member of St. Remy. I was hesitant but he insisted. 31 years was my response which was followed by. "31 years?? Your an old fart!" I can't help but laugh when I recall that conversation!

On Christmas 2006 while the rest of the world celebrated with their families, Mr. Conklin responded to my home in Afton. When no one else responded to the frantic 911 calls, because I was hemorrhaging, Mr. Conklin responded. He attempted to get help there and then once he knew an ambulance was on its way, he drove to the end of the highway and waited. He led them into our driveway and stayed with my then husband till the ambulance left with me inside. He was quite a man. May he rest in peace.
