Obituary of Hope C. Meyer

Hope C. Meyer Sidney, NY Hope Crandall Meyer, 85, of Sidney, went peacefully to be with our Lord on Tuesday, October 29, 2013, at Bassett Hospital. She was born August 6, 1928, in Oneonta to Leroy and Helena (Donlin) Crandall of Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland. She attended Saint Mary's School and graduated from Oneonta High School in 1945 at age 16. After graduation, Hope was offered a position with the FBI in Washington DC for 6 months at the end of WWII. She was employed by New York State Electric and Gas before becoming a homemaker and raising five children. In 1951 Hope married Patrick F. O'Hara, who predeceased her in 1952. She later married William R. Meyer in 1957 and resided in Oneonta. Hope and Bill moved to Sidney and built one of the first homes on Hatfield Avenue. Following William's retirement from the NY State Police in 1977, Hope and Bill traveled extensively throughout Europe and visited relatives in Germany and Ireland. They then enjoyed a long career of buying and selling antiques and collectibles throughout the eastern United States. Hope was a voracious reader of mysteries and enjoyed traveling, including their annual week of vacation to the Saratoga Race Track and Lake George. She was a devoted member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sidney. Hope will be remembered with love by: her husband of 56 years, William R. Meyer of Sidney; children Patrick (Nancy) O'Hara of Arnold Lake, Milford; William (Sharon) Meyer of Sidney; Stephen (Bonnie) Meyer of West Winfield; Bridget (Steven) Bargher of Sidney; and Gerald (Leslie) Meyer of Sidney; grandchildren Dr. Ashley (Evan Brady) O'Hara; Helena (Justin) LaDue; Chloe Meyer; Heike and DeAnna Meyer; Nicole, Brandy and Zachary Bargher; Gerald and Zoe Meyer; and great-grandchildren EmmaLynn and Holden LaDue. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Anita Meyer (Ernest) Steinsdorfer of Park Ridge, NJ, sister-in-law Joan Crandall of Oneonta and numerous nieces and nephews. Hope was predeceased by her parents Leroy and Helena Crandall, a brother Gerald Crandall, her first husband, Patrick F. O'Hara, and granddaughter Kaylan Rae Bargher. Friends are invited to call from 10:00am-12noon on Friday, November 1, 2013 at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St. Sidney. Funeral services will follow at 12noon at the funeral chapel with Fr. Gordon Polenz, pastor officiating. Burial will take place at 9:00am on Saturday, November 2nd in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Oneonta.
