I remember Jane so well from my years as her pastor in the late '70s. I remember her helping move a church piano, singing in the choir, selling milk from their Hereford cows, going to the clothesline in the winter in bare feet. I recall her kindness and generosity to all kinds of people, her tremendous energy and good humor, her embodiment of the basics in life. She was always kind and helpful to me, a young and green pastor. Since leaving Bainbridge, I have seen her at various events, and it was always a pleasure. I thank God for her life and friendship.

I was sad to hear that Jane's life ended but joyful to know that she is now in a better place. My condolences to her family. She was a wonderful presence in Bainbridge; a hard worker always dedicated to her family, church and career. My mother Doris Bliss, enjoyed many good times at church with Jane and I still remember her and the girls walking to church in the freezing cold winter and never taking a ride from us. No wonder they were so healthy.
Rest in peace Jane, you deserve it.

We have lots of memories of both Jane and Ken during our time in Bainbridge. She let us borrow a 2 wheeler contraption for Fritzy until he got his back legs working again. I (Mary Ann) was in several plays with them. both were unique individuals and we will always remember: Jane walking barefoot to church, carrying her sandals...and Ken's otrageous statements backstage ("..was busy today 'molesting the cows!'. Our sympathy to the family and gratitude for sharing such great parents. Love, RLC/MAC

As a Noto from across the street, I have known Jane all my life. However, as I became an adult and got involved in the chamber and raising puppies that she truly became a friend.
I don't have to tell you all what an amazing person she was or how much she did for people-you already know that. But what we can tell you is that many are mourning with you over loosing this amazing lady of Bainbridge.
She told me several times that she never thought she would get married so she wanted to be interesting. Well, 8 kids later, she ramained interesting all her life. We all were blessed to be touched by her.
Please know we love you all.

Where do I begin...I have had more memories running through my head of not just you Mama Jane, but Grandpy too!!! I just want to go back in time...I want to be spending my summers in Bainbridge, sleeping 6 or more to a bed...getting yelled at to go to sleep...being woke up at the crack of dawn (which at the time I hated, but now love and want to do again) to go with Grandpy to get breakfast so he can spread the cream cheese on all our bagels because it was only good when he did it!!! Going to the house and down to the barn to milk the cows and collect the eggs before going on calls...riding down back roads and into fields like a mad man...walking to church...walking what seem like forever to the river to take a swim...just you two and Karla and I!!! They say you never realize what you have until it is gone...Well I can say...I knew you and Grandpy were special...you taught me some of life's most important lessons; shared your knowledge with me; showed me what love was all about. There is not a day that goes by that I don't want to press the rewind button and do it all over again!! I love you Mama Jane!!

I remember well Jane and Ken and their devotion to the community and to their church. I was pastor of the Bainbridge Presbyterian Church from 1986 to 1993. One of my favorite memories of Jane was seeing her walking to town in her barefeet, with shoes in hand ...
Jane was most supportive when my elderly cat succumbed while I was away on vacation. She tried everything to keep that cat alive until I got home, but it wasn't to be. Jane did arrange for me to adopt two of Tracey and Gary's cats, though, and they were my faithful companions for 13 years. Jane managed to fit a lot of living and a lot of loving in her 87 years!

An irreplaceable "country doctor" who will be missed forever. She and Ken were a special breed; loving, bright, generous and down to earth, totally, uncharacteristic of the typical doctors. They were both Courageous and great compassionate human beings, may they fly with the angels!

To The Benson Family;I was blessed to grow up in the village of Bainbridge NY and to have as a mentor Doc and Jane Benson. I was one of those young boys that Doc took with him on calls and when, on a Sat morning we would have to share the space I would stay behind and be taught life lesson by a wonderful lady- Jane. I learned what ever Jane was doing at the time, baking pies, cakes, tending to babies, listening how to treat others and reaching out to those that had less. I helded dogs and cats that got nutered. I cleaned the kennels when they were gone and got paid 75 cents for each cat cage and 50 cents for every dog cage. Jane always spent a lot of time with me telling me about life and how to be part of something. She was a great lady, friend and confident. She was smart beyond her years.Compassionate, loving and a caregiver. She was couragious, outspoken and true to herself. She was a pioneer woman that could have been the first woman congressman in the new frontier, but first and formost she was a servant of GOD,a supportive wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother(?). I could tell a million Jane Benson stories, but one that sticks in my mind as a boy of 8 years old, I asked her, why do you take so long to eat that piece of pie, she waited until she had finished a mouthful and said, David I chew my food 32 times and so should you. I love you jane and thank you for the memories

Dear Family,
Wow! the first time I met Jane, I knew she was someone special. I can't say how many of our small animals she saved. We sang in the choir together, her resounding alto always strong. We went to sing with the Binghamton Downtown Singers, when she drove the 5 J's to sing, always barefoot, and we had some crazy rides. She always had a smile and was ready to help anyone in need. I'm so glad I spent some time with her, and Bainbridge has now lost two of it's most important citizens. Rest in peace Jane and Doc, well done.

My Aunt Jane was a big-hearted person whom I will miss a lot! She was always there for us whenever we needed her and was a very positive influence in my life! I always will remember her every time I make applesauce using the strainer she gave me as a bridal shower gift. She was one of my favorite people in my life!

Hello to Jane and Ken Benson's children and their families,
I am saddened to learn of Jane's passing.
As a kid growing up along Route 7 between Bainbridge and Sidney, we had plenty of cats and dogs and took many of them to see your parents. Each time we raced to town because of an emergency, I went with fixed feelings. I felt sorry for the animal in dire straights, but I also knew I was about to spend time with two extraordinary people. Jane and Ken wowed me with their personalities and the way they lived life.
In my high school years, I rarely drove into town without looking up your long driveway and asking myself, "I wonder what the Benson household is up to today?"
Amazingly, in 1969 I had the good fortune of having our paths cross in West Africa. You all were finishing a year of living in Ghana, and I was about to begin a summer of study at the university in Accra. You and your parents were most welcoming. I think Jane and Ken could sense that I was feeling a long, long way from home. I will always remember their kindness and inclusive attitude.
They were models for me in terms of how to treat people and how to conduct one's self. Yes, it is sad they have passed, but what they contributed to the world has not. Their example taught me, and others, to live life to the fullest, go out and do something meaningful, be adventurous, think of others, and be kind. These are timeless standards by which to live, and Jane and Ken did so, magnificently.
Sincerely yours,
Joe Daly

Many, many fond memories of growing up so closely to the Benson family. Jane was at times a 2nd mother to me, scolding me as if I were one of her own when Allison and I would stretch the boundaries just a little. She cared for several of my family pets through the years because there was no one I trusted more. Her smile will forever shine in our hearts. God Bless
