Our favorite joke with eachother was about my nose. He always said I would grow into my nose! Words cannot begin to express the sadness that surrounds this passing of such an incredible man. I treasure every encounter I have had with him. I cherish the fact that he and Mrs Rice trusted me with babysitting their wonderful children in my teenage years. May we all live such a rewarding life and remember the things that are most important to us and those around us. Rest in peace Mr Rice.

A special man who lived life to the fullest. Dan and I had many funny conversations over the years as we patrolled the halls of BG. He was a wonderful mentor and peer. His legacy will live on for years to come. He was a true teacher, one who gave as much as he expected.

Not just a colleague, a friend. Not just a mentor, a model. A candle lit tonight in the mountains of southern Africa where his love, passion, and energy continue to vibrate through me, and across the universe and for all time through those like me who had the great fortune to know, love, work with, and learn from Dan Rice. My condolences to Ada and the family.

I am very saddened and my heart breaks just a little bit more. Mr. Rice was a great man and the best teacher I ever had . I think I paid attention to him so well because I was scared to death of him and I could never tell if he was joking or being serious and that right there made me pay attention to every word he ever said. He will be greatly missed by many.

Mr. Rice--the reason I write and spell correctly. The reason I proof read and reference a thesaurus, the reason I have a love for the English language. I am so very sad to hear of his passing. This world lost a wonderful human being.

Sending a wish for peace and comfort to the entire Rice family. To Mr Rice I was either "Strawberry Jam" or "Jim"! He loved to tease his students in any way he could. He made English class fun and interesting. I loved his Halloween costumes....oh how he enjoyed trying to stump us! As a friend of Andi's, he tried to be stern, but I always knew he had a heart of gold. And because I would tease him back, I'd usually get a smile or laugh out of him :) I am glad to have been your student, Mr. Rice. May you watch over your family knowing you've built fond memories to be shared with them and bring them their own peace.

Mr. Rice---you truly will be missed...you were such a great teacher...I remember there wasn't a day that went by that you didn't get a stick of gum from your students...the fear of having to wear it on your nose for the entire period--(a funny memory)...RIP..you will always be a favorite teacher

What a brilliantly written piece! In true Rice fashion I am left looking up a word meaning on dictionary.com and wondering whether or not Mr. Rice wrote this himself :) A patriarch to a fabulous family I will miss him forever...

I remember having to meet with Mr. Rice to go over a book I was "supposed to have read." It was very obvious that I only read the back cover of the book and thought I could pull it off-ha. Yet even though I know that he knew, he still prompted me to discuss key topics that I should have gathered from reading the book as assigned. Thank you Mr. Rice for that moment. I did read the book that summer because I felt like I should, so you got your message across without saying a word. Rest in peace my teacher and my friend.

Dan was my 8th grade English teacher. He enhanced my appreciation for the classics such as Red Pony and others. One of my fondest memories, however, is that he was the first teacher ever who allowed us to have candy bars in the classroom - as long as we had one for him too. He will be sorely missed.

Mr. Rice was one of my favorite teachers, and he was such a great teacher. I can't begin to tell you how many popsicles Lesley Benson Brown and I ate so we could use the sticks to make our replication of the barn in The Red Pony. May you rest in peace Mr. Rice. My thoughts are with the Mrs. Rice and family.

I am sorry to hear of Mr. Rice's death. He was one of my favorite English teacher's at B-G. I fondly (?) remember learning his very long list of comma rules in eighth grade, and find myself wishing my childrens' teachers would teach them so well. In twelfth grade, he prepared his students well for college, teaching us how to properly write and document a research paper. He truly was a good teacher, demanding, but kind. He had a great sense of humor and truly cared for his students. I know many people will miss him, and I send my condolences to his family and friends.

I made the annual pilgrimage back to Bainbridge this past weekend to see family. A time for reflection and sharing of stories. A time to revisit memories of canoe regattas and family picnics past. My sister asked me if I knew that Dan Rice had just passed away. My jaw dropped and I recounted to her that on my dining room table was a post-it note that said “Dan Rice – Red Pony. I had written it a couple of weeks earlier as reminder for me to get a letter out to this wonderful teacher whose lessons were indelibly written in the memory of one of his students from 1972. I wanted to let him know that forty-plus years later, I found myself thinking about the Red Pony one morning. I remember getting my Red Pony book report back with the word “SUPERFICIAL written across the top in caps. I was crushed. I think it was the first time I’d gotten a paper back with any sort of criticism on it. I had followed the same formula that had served me well up to that point in my education, rehashing the story line - what had happened to who and when. Well, that wasn’t what Mr. Rice wanted. He wanted us to analyze the book and tell him what it meant. So there I was looking in the mirror, shaving and analyzing the Red Pony within the context of events, relationships and careers that had transpired in that forty-year span. Thank you Mr. Rice for challenging us to dig deeper and to think critically. Thank you for treating a bunch of hormone infused, angst riddled adolescents as adults in your eighth-grade English class. Thank you for opening up a world of ideas with questions such as “What is king in America?
I think about another story that we read. It ends with the prized possession of a young boy, a figurine of a horse, getting swept into the ocean by a wave. As the wave recedes, there in its place appeared on the beach a perfectly matched pair of tiger paw shells. I think of Mr. Rice getting swept into the ocean of time. There in his place are the lessons and memories of a life lived well. God’s peace to the family, friends and students of Dan Rice as we grieve your passing.

Dan was the new kid on the block in the Bainbridge HS faculty room when I first student taught. Subsequently I hired on as the new kid for a three year stint.
What I remember about Dan was his youthful energy and ready smile. We were both blessed to have George Vicary as our department chair...and vicar he was...Dan and I learned a lot about being an educator from George.
I spent many an hour with the two of them, jumping ducks on the Susquehanna, flushing grouse in the overgrown farmland, listening to Larry Vredenburg's beagle chasing rabbits over hill and dale. Back then hunters lived by a code that demanded respect, and that same respect was enjoyed by Dan until the day he died, I am sure.
