Obituary of George H. Papastrat

George H. Papastrat Sidney, NY George H. Papastrat, 91, of Sidney, passed away Friday, November 2, 2012 at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown. He was born May 18, 1921, son of the late Harry G. Papastrat and Jenny (Metrakos) Papastrat in Binghamton, NY and resided in Sidney since 1947. In 1940, he graduated from Binghamton Central School. George honorably served his country during World War II, serving in the Coast Guard aboard the U.S.S. Leonard Wood. During his tour of duty, he took part in several invasions: North Africa, Sicily, Gilbert Island Group, Marshall Island Group, Eniwetok and Saipan. After World War II, he attended and graduated from Ridley School of Business. George married Ethel Anagnost on June 9, 1946 at the Holy Trinity Church in Binghamton. Upon moving to Sidney, he was the proprietor of George H. Papastrat Wines and Liquors from 1947 to 1983, and from 1951 to 1971, was a partner of Reliable Finance Company of Pearl River, NY. He was a longtime member of the Holy Trinity Church in Binghamton, as well as a senior member of the Charles L. Jacobi American Legion Post #183, V.F.W., Elks Lodge, Masonic Lodge and the Sidney Golf and Country Club. George is survived by: Son and daughter-in-law, Harry and Gloria Papastrat, Sidney 3 Grandsons: Marine Sgt. George and Elyse Papastrat, Jacksonville, NC Alexander G. Papastrat, New Orleans, LA Anthony J. Papastrat, Sidney 2 Great Granddaughters, Anastacia Sophia Papastrat and Eleni Athanasia Papastrat Sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Dino Giamakouras, Vestal As well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. George was predeceased by his wife, Ethel; three children; and his brother and sister-in-law, Peter and Mary Papastrat. Friends may call Saturday, November 10, 2012 from 12 Noon to 2:00pm at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St. Sidney. Funeral services will follow at 2:00pm at the funeral chapel. Father Cyprian of Holy Trinity Monastery, Jordonville, NY will officiate. Burial will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sidney Emergency Squad, River St. Sidney, NY 13838 or the Sidney Community Foundation Veteran's Park, P.O. Box 333 Sidney, NY 13838.
