Thomas N. Gross 62 of Gilbertsville died unexpectedly at home on August 26, 2012.
He was born November 29, 1949 and was the son of Gordon E. and Martha J. Gross. He grew up in Gilbertsville, graduating with the Class of 1970. Tom joined the United States Marine Corp in July 1970, was discharged in 1973 and continued to serve in the reserves for more three years.
He married Debra J. Wilber on July 29, 1978 in Oneonta. Tom was a foster father for Otsego County for 33 years and for over 200 children. He is still called 'Dad" by many.
Tom was the advisor for the Gilbertsville Fire Dept. Explorer Post 44. He enjoyed working with and training youths for 17 years. He was a 38 year member of the Gilbertsville Fire Dept and was presently holding the office of First Lieutenant. Tom was honored as Fireman of the Year in 1997. He was recognized as one of the best pump operators and trainers the department has ever had.
He was also a member of the Gilbertsville American Legion Post #1339.
Tom was employed by Amphenol in Sidney for over 37 years when he retired on December 23, 2011.
He greatly enjoyed family activities, camping, trains and traveling.

Ten children - LeighAnn Gross and her fianc Dan Wright, Christopher Gross and his wife Kassie. Dustin, SueEllen, Katie, Courtney, Hannah, Deandre, Emily and Natalie Gross all at home.
Granddaughter Hailey Gross.
Former foster children - Tatianna Chase and Kayla Armstrong
Sisters - Kathy Pope and her husband Rick of Rockdale
Sharon Hermann and her husband Steve of West Oneonta
And Bethany Fite of Colorado
Uncle - Lyle Gross, Greene
3 Aunts - Isabella Lanthier, Mass., Margaret Nelson, Ohio, Veronica Nelson, Oneonta
And several nieces, nephews and cousins
Tom is also predeceased by his daughter Becky Gross.
Friends may call Thursday, August 30, 2012 from 6-8 PM at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel 21 Main St. Sidney.
Funeral services will be held Friday, August 31, 2012 at 11:00 AM at the First Baptist Church of Gilbertsville. Burial with military honors will follow in Brookside Cemetery in Gilbertsville.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Becky Gross Memorial Fund in care of the First Baptist Church of Gilbertsville.
