Kathryne,
I am not sure if you will remember me ,but I waited on you and Bruce up to The Silo Restaurant, I thought the world of you two and always was glad to see you. I was so sorry when I read about Bruce passing. I will never forget either one of you. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Thanks, Sharon; not sure if my Mom has read your note and kind words, but I will pass those on to her.
If you waited on my parents, you likely also waited on me; it was a favorite spot to go for my dad when I was home from college or later from Maine.

Kathy, Craig and Bruce,
I am very sorry to hear about your husband and father. While Bruce was working on RT.7 with Scott and Kathy you were working in the medical field, I ventured with Craig and Bruce. Perhaps I should begin by joggling the boys memories - hidden buzzers, boobytrap electric shocks around your house! The giggling coconspirators would belly roll laugh as I screamed with surprise and slight electric fence type tingling (and I was also secretly delighted they were using such scientific experimentation). We had a terrific summer. These boys were impressive with their ability to bike from Sidney Center to Sidney and once to Unadilla for a swim. One day about a mile from Tryon's Corner, our biking adventure ended abruptly as Bruce skidded in the gravel and crashed his ride - blood, guts, gore, bike ripped in half - okay okay - some exaggeration but we did require transportation from the scene. I was quite apprehensive about how Kathy and Bruce would react. Kathy, kind as always, reassured me all was well and accidents happen. Now with fear and knees knocking I stood before Bruce. I was waiting for a scolding . . . I waited, preparing for the - but instead - he grinned. Of course I had heard about Bruce being tough with his workers, but it was then I understood him a little bit better. I grinned back and he asked me what the boys and I were going to do for our next adventure. "Fishing", I retorted, "and a picnic." And a picnic we had - of course they packed the lunch boxes to the brim with yummies and more yummies and of course they came equipped with batteries, wire, buzzers, and shock devices! My memories with The Howes family were fond and fun. I again am sorry for your loss but maybe reading and remembering this memory will put a grin on your faces. Smiles, hugs and comfort, bethie

Thanks for sharing that Beth. As the one who took the nose dive off the front of my bike, because I used the front brake, a lesson I learned all too well, and remember to this day. I have fond memories of you having us pick up litter from the side of the road, people littered a lot back then, and though I don't quite remember all of the events of your creative writing, I did enjoy reading it. Appreciate your condolences on my dad, he was an incredible man.
Warmly.

My dad passed on Thanksgiving day, eulogy / obit below.
Hope you take a few minutes to read.
He will be greatly missed.
Was blessed to have him as a father.
Solider, husband, father, business owner, patriot, friend.
As I mark your passing onto your eternal reward on November 26, 2020, I reflect back with profound gratitude for the gifts of knowledge and discipline you’ve given me over the last 50 years of my life. Such much of who I am, what I believe, and what I do can be attributed to what I learned from you growing up.
When I was growing up, one of the things that I grew to appreciate about my father was his desire that I know to repair, and not just replace things. This was a trait he learned from his own father, himself a business owner. It was a trait that has come to serve me well over the last five decades, as I moved into self-employment, and business ownership, following the path set by my grandfather some 100 years ago.
My dad encouraged my own dreams and aspirations growing up, and especially when I first left college and started out in business at age 21. He stood solidly by as my best friend and advisor ever since. He was the best man at my wedding, always there when I needed him. He enjoyed visiting me at my business in Maine, and I even got him behind our service counter for a bit.
He was always a great fan of quoting poems around the dinner table, and none seemed to be more favored than the special one below. I likewise grew to admire and emulate his love for quotes and poems, and it took no effort at all to get him to launch into a full-throated and rousing rendition of John Greenleaf Whittier’s inspiring “Don’t Quit”, something I fondly remember doing often at the dinner table.
Though he was never in the automotive business, he served during the Korean War, on Okinawa, and continued on his service retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army and Army Reserve, where he taught command and general staff. Like myself, a Dale Carnegie graduate, and it was my dad's experience with, and high praise for Dale Carnegie, that inspired me to take the course.
After the war, he went to work for his father, running construction equipment, as the firm Jess Howes Inc, was very active in the region building roads and bridges. On his own father's passing, he purchased, owned, and managed the family building supply business in upstate New York. He was also an extremely gracious benefactor to the community, extending mortgages and credit to those who were in need.
We're all, in some way, echos of our parents, and in what we saw and what we learned growing up. I'm realizing more and more every day how blessed I was to have had, and have the parents that the good Lord granted me. I hope that I have in some small way been able to give some of that back to others.
The flag photo was taken a few years back at my home in Maine. 87 years old and he still hadn’t forgotten how to stand at attention. And he was just as proud of his service today as he was 70 years ago. Very blessed to be the son of this fine man.
I greatly appreciate your thoughts, prayers, and well wishes for him. His name was also Bruce, but I just called him Dad.
Respectfully,
Bruce J. Howes

Craig, Abby and family,
Blair and I were sorry to hear of Bruce's passing. I did not know him well but I remember Blair talking about him when he worked on the Rt 7 construction job. He was his boss and a tough one but a good one. I talked to him a few times about the veterans park and I know how much he appreciated it and supported it.
May your memories help you all through this difficult time. Our condolences to your Mom.

What an amazing life for a normally quiet and reserved man. I say that a bit tongue-in-cheek, as Brice usually had quips and jokes and more to say the more you got to know him.
One fond memory I have is during the years WCDO hosted a client Christmas party at the Welcome Inn, he and Kathryne were usually the first guests to arrive and were also the most appreciative.
He took on an iconic business and has handed it off to the next generation. His many donations for Eagle Scout (and other) projects should never be forgotten.
Condolences to the Howes family. Thank you for you service and rest easy, Bruce, your work is done.

Thank you Ms. Place, for your kind words, and what you do for the history of Sidney Center.
I hope to come and visit the historical society this spring/summer, contingent on the pandemic.
I may have some copies of photos and such from our family that you may be interested in.
My dad was a prolific photographer, and sent me many photos of the years to scan and copy, would be nice to share those with the Maywood group.

Sorry to hear. Remember the store from the 50's when I would go with my dad, Harold Fisher (such a treat to get a gumball out of the gumball machine). Much more recently, Bill and I would get supplies from Bruce/"Red" and enjoy the conversations with him. We always enjoyed his strong personality and humor. Missed him when he retired, although we also enjoy dealing with Craig who is doing a wonderful job of carrying on. Thank you for telling more of his life's story that we were unaware of, a remarkable man. Cindy and Bill Bergmann

Thanks for your kind words on his life story Cindy, not something that I had hoped to write for many, many years.
Still, I felt it was important to tell my dad's story, and share the adventures of a small-town boy who traveled around the world but was always happiest back home in Sidney Center.
