Obituary of David R. Smith
David R. Smith
Bainbridge, NY
David R. Smith, 65, of Bainbridge, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, March 15, 2020 at Binghamton General Hospital.
David was born June 28, 1954 at The Hospital, Sidney, NY, son of Douglas R. and Martha (Youngs) Smith.
David, aka "Reno", lived his entire life in Bainbridge. He graduated from Bainbridge Guilford Central School and followed a varied and colorful career path. His enterprising young nature led to his first job as a (bicycle powered) newspaper carrier for the Sun Bulletin. He delivered groceries and clerked in the Garden Food Store, and served as an archery instructor and counselor at the boys camp at Buckhorn Lake. After graduating high school, he went to work at the Borden Resin Plant. In 1974, he survived a serious motor vehicle accident and went on to co-found Reno's Hardware with his parents. Later, with brother Tom, came Outback Mechanical Music followed by a vintage lighting shop.
David's keen intellect and wonderful sense of humor propelled him through life. Many benefited from his generosity, particularly in the form of cookies—he was a marvelous baker; in receipt of not so anonymous mailings—his wit at work; and by his wise counsel—his love and devotion to friends and family.
David is survived by his brother, Thomas C. Smith and sister, Joan (David) Lieb; special aunt, Eileen Keeler, many cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Richard D. Smith.
In keeping with David's wishes, there will be no services.
Truly, the world has lost a very special person and he will be missed.
